The American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft horse was founded by two horsemen. Everett Smith, who owned The Sugarbush Hitch Company in Ohio and Mike Muir, who started the Stonewall Sport Horses. The breed was founded by Everett Smith in 1998 and is a rare American draft breed. Mr. Smith envisioned a horse that would have the diverse coat colors and hardiness of the Stonewall Sport horses and the draft horse confirmation and stellar disposition.
The breed began in 1998 when Mr. Smith bred his Percheron mare, Sugarbush Felina del Noche, to Mr. Muir’s 3/4 Percheron Stonewall Stallion, Stonewall Rascal. The first Sugarbush Harlequin Draft was born in 1999, Sugarbush Harley Quinne. He was a high-percentage draft leopard colt and is a legend in the breed. The second Sugarbush Harlequin draft was born after Mr. Smith crossed Sugarbush Felina del Noche to Mr. Muir’s Stonewall Domino. This foal was named Sugarbush O Rosamunde.
